Fall Fashion Guidelines

By: Kylie Nocket

As fall rolls around, this means two things. The first being the change in weather and diet; for the familiar October chill fills the air, and we are only eating/drinking things with some form of pumpkin spice in it. The return of fall also means a change in wardrobe. In honor of the always anticipated shift from summer shorts to fall flannels, here are a couple guidelines for the upcoming fashion season:

  • First off, let’s start with the things were leaving in the summer- Those white chunky Fila shoes. Sorry, it had to be said. I would also prefer to leave the “iconic” Gucci belts in the past, but that’s a whole different story…

  • The Oversized Flannel Shirt- This timeless trend can be paired with your favorite skinny jeans and a pair of ankle booties to achieve the perfect fall fit.
  • Thigh-High Boots- Pretty self explanatory, thigh-highs are ALWAYS a look. Pair them with a jean skirt, or tuck your go-to jeans into them; the thigh-highs are a statement piece that is around to stay.

  • All-Black Outfits- I will admit I am inclined towards supporting the all-black looks, but for good reason. A pair of black jeans or leggings, paired with a leather jacket, sweater, and a pair of combat boots (Doc Martens recommended but not required) can turn anyone into the most fashionable and intimidating person in the room.
  • Statement Sunglasses- Just because the summer sun is quickly fleeting, this does not mean that sunglasses have to leave with it. A pair of oversized sunglasses can bring a little extra spice to a fall outfit. Best paired with scarves and some sort of messy yet windswept hairstyle, statement sunglasses prove to be a necessary accessory in dominating the fall fashion game.

  •  Coats, Coats, and More Coats- Trench coats, oversized blazers, cropped jackets, jean jackets, you name it, we’re here for it. Throwing any of these options on top of any sort of top, graphic tee or a fitted sweater, prove to be transformational for any fall fit.
  • A Good Belt- There is a time and a place for everything… especially belts. I am a firm believer that a solid belt is an essential and functional piece of the wardrobe. Especially in the fall season, belts can be useful for making those jeans you like but you don’t love a bit more appealing. With a slouchy sweater and some kind of jean bottom, belts will be another detail to make fall more fashionable.

However… Here is my disclaimer. In today’s world, belts are abused and overused. Do not wear a belt if you already have a lot going on in your outfit. For example, I am not trying to see a cheetah top paired with extremely ripped jeans, AND a flashy belt. Once again, there is a time and a place for everything.
